The new 16-bit microcontrollers PIC24 family is growing. After introducing “big” 64-, 80- and 100-pin microcontrollers in TQFP packages, Microchip announces new PIC24HJ12GP201 and PIC24HJ12GP202 in 18-pin SDIP/SOIC and 28-pin SDIP/SOIC/QFN.

Both of them feature:

  • Vdd Range +3.0 to +3.6
  • 1 UART
  • 1 SPI™
  • 1024 Bytes SRAM
  • 12 KBytes Program FLASHK
  • 2 Output Compare/Std. PWM
  • 4 Input Capture
  • ICSP™
  • 1 I²C™ Compatible Interface
  • 40 MIPs CPU Speed
  • Clock Oscillator FRC+PLL and HS+PLL
  • 1 ADC 12-Bit
  • 1 ADC 10-bit
  • 3 16-Bit Timers

Although the new 16-bit PIC24 microcontrollers family seems to be very interesting option for both professionals and hobbists, there is still not enough information in the data sheets and application notes… When the PIC24 family was introduced, one of the main feature, which interested many people, was the JTAG. But, information about possibility of the JTAG programming and debugging are still not included in any technical documentation. Although, Microchip placed the JTAG connector on the PIC24 demo board, there is still officially no JTAG programmer.
